What it is
Hay’s younger sibling — wetter, softer, denser nutrition.
Haylage is grass cut at a higher moisture than hay (around 35–45%), wilted briefly in the field, then sealed in plastic wrap to ferment slowly without spoiling. The result is a feed that smells fresh, feels supple, and holds onto the sugars and protein that drying off into hay would otherwise lose.
It’s the choice for horses with respiratory sensitivities — with virtually no airborne dust or mould spores compared to dry hay — and for animals that need a denser ration than meadow hay alone.
Why owners choose haylage
Three good reasons.
- Virtually dust-free. Wrapping locks the moisture in — nothing for an irritated airway to react to.
- Higher nutrition per bite. Wilting preserves more of the sugars, protein and leaf than full sun-drying.
- Easy on fussy eaters. Soft, fragrant and palatable — horses that pick at hay will often hoover up haylage.
